The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent endorsements of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027. The party’s spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, emphasized that the people of Lagos would resist any attempts to impose Seyi Tinubu as their governor, stressing that governorship is not a gift to be inherited.
Amode’s statement follows the endorsements of Seyi Tinubu by the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and the socio-political group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu. However, these endorsements have drawn criticism from various stakeholders, who argue that Seyi Tinubu’s potential governorship bid is an attempt to impose a non-indigene on the people of Lagos.
The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths has also condemned the idea of a Tinubu family member taking over the governorship, insisting that non-indigenes should not be allowed to govern Lagos State. The group emphasized that the people of Lagos would not support Seyi Tinubu’s governorship bid, citing the fact that many Lagosians did not vote for President Bola Tinubu in the last presidential election.
In response to the criticism, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, dismissed the conversation about the 2027 elections as premature. Oladejo urged people to focus on supporting the current government, rather than speculating about future elections.
However, the Lagos PDP remains adamant in its opposition to Seyi Tinubu’s potential governorship bid. The party’s spokesperson, Hakeem Amode, emphasized that the people of Lagos would not be swayed by attempts to impose a non-indigene on them. Amode stressed that governorship is not a gift to be inherited, but rather a position that requires the trust and support of the people.
In conclusion, the Lagos PDP’s rejection of Seyi Tinubu’s potential governorship bid highlights the party’s commitment to ensuring that the people of Lagos are not imposed upon. The party’s emphasis on the importance of indigeneship and the need for a governor who is committed to the economy and culture of Lagos is a clear indication that the 2027 elections will be highly contested.
