The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the recent subsidy removal by state governors, despite the significant increase in allocations to states. The federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies has led to a rise in allocations to states by N1.7 trillion ¹.The NLC has criticized governors for not doing enough to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, particularly workers, amidst the economic challenges posed by the subsidy removal. The labour union argues that the increased allocations should have been used to improve the welfare of workers and provide relief to the most vulnerable citizens.In contrast, some state governments have taken steps to mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal. For instance, the Ogun State Government has approved a N10,000 salary increase for workers and pensioners, as well as hazard allowances for health and medical personnel ².The federal government has also allocated N7.76 trillion for salaries and non-debt recurrent costs, including a N210 billion wage award for federal workers ³. However, the labour union remains unimpressed, arguing that more needs to be done to address the economic challenges facing Nigerian workers.
