The Kwara State Ministry of Environment has sealed a cold room in Ilorin, the state capital, after it was discovered to be selling spoilt fish to unsuspecting members of the public.
Confirming the development, the Kwara State Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, said the ministry’s enforcement officers took immediate action to protect public health.
“Our officers have done the needful by stopping the sale of the contaminated fish, confiscating the products, and sealing off the premises to prevent further distribution,” she stated.
Buge strongly warned business operators across the state to desist from engaging in the sale of unwholesome or unhealthy food items, describing such acts as inhuman, ungodly, and a clear violation of environmental and public health laws.
The commissioner commended residents for their active participation in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held on Saturday, particularly in the areas of waste disposal and bush clearing around their homes.
She urged Kwarans to continue prioritizing cleanliness and hygiene to prevent diseases, encouraging them to join future sanitation activities, maintain clean surroundings, and promptly report any suspicious or harmful practices that could threaten public health to the ministry or the nearest law enforcement agency.
Saturday’s exercise was closely monitored by the Chairman of the Kwara State House Committee on Environment, Hon. Omotosho AbdulRazaq, and the General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Hon. Jide Aina. Both officials interacted with community associations and local groups to encourage more public participation and environmental responsibility among residents.
