The Kwara State Government has officially abolished the collection of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies in all public primary schools across the state.
The decision aims to relieve parents of financial burdens while ensuring that schools have adequate funding to manage their day-to-day operations.
This landmark development was announced by the Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Professor Shehu Adaramaja,
during the bid opening ceremony for the 2024 (3rd and 4th quarters) UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects held in Ilorin, the state capital.According to Professor Adaramaja,
the approval to stop PTA levies came directly from the state governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who also sanctioned the introduction of annual school grants to serve as replacement funding.
These grants are designed to provide every public primary school with sufficient operational support, covering essential needs such as classroom maintenance, minor repairs, and administrative running costs.
“The governor has approved the stoppage of the payment of PTA in all public primary schools in the state. From primary one to six, no more payment of PTA in Kwara State,” Adaramaja declared.
He further revealed that the government had commenced the immediate disbursement of grants to at least 1,717 public schools across the state.
This initiative, he explained, aligns with the administration’s commitment to improving access to quality education and reducing the financial pressures on parents.
In addition, Professor Adaramaja announced that Governor AbdulRazaq had approved the procurement of English and Mathematics textbooks for pupils in primary one to six.
These learning materials, he noted, would be distributed free of charge to pupils in all public primary schools, ensuring that no child is left behind due to lack of study materials.
Speaking on the UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, Adaramaja outlined the scope of works to be executed across Kwara State.
The projects include the construction of a block of two classrooms with an office, the construction of VIP toilets, remodeling and renovation of classrooms, drilling of solar-powered boreholes with tank stands,
rehabilitation of digital literacy centres, and the procurement of foundation literacy teaching and learning materials for early-grade pupils. Other projects include the fabrication and distribution of two-seater
pupils’ furniture and the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative in selected local government areas.The SUBEB chairman also disclosed that Governor AbdulRazaq had approved the payment of 2025
counterpart funds for the continued execution of UBEC/SUBEB intervention projects, demonstrating the state’s proactive approach to ensuring uninterrupted progress in the education sector.
Adaramaja warned contractors handling the projects to adhere strictly to approved standards and specifications, stressing that shoddy work would not be tolerated. He emphasized the government’s
commitment to transparency and accountability in all education-related initiatives.He also extended his appreciation to the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hajiya Aisha Garba, and other key education stakeholders for their continuous support and contributions
toward the success of the programme.Through these reforms, the Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to providing free, quality, and inclusive basic education for all children in
the state. By abolishing PTA levies and providing school grants, the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is
not only easing the financial burden on parents but also strengthening the foundation of public education in Kwara State.
