Members of the Kebbi State Caucus in the National Assembly have called for the arrest and prosecution of the former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, over allegations of inciting unrest in the state.
The lawmakers made the call on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja. Speaking on behalf of the caucus, Senator Adamu Aliero, who represents Kebbi Central, dismissed Malami’s petition against Governor Nasir Idris as baseless and politically motivated.
Malami, in a petition dated September 10, 2025, accused Governor Idris and other political figures in the state of allegedly importing thugs, foreign mercenaries, and engaging in arms deals.
Senator Aliero, flanked by other Kebbi lawmakers, said the petition was nothing more than an attempt by Malami to destabilize the state.
“These allegations are false, unfounded, and politically driven. They represent a desperate move by Malami, who now parades himself as leader of a non-existent opposition in Kebbi, to undermine the peace and stability our people currently enjoy under Governor Nasir Idris,” he stated.
He alleged that during a condolence visit to Birnin Kebbi, Malami hired thugs from neighboring Sokoto, Koko, and Rara, who later attacked the state’s APC Secretariat, chanting anti-government slogans and sparking violent clashes with party supporters.
“This unprecedented incident speaks volumes about who is truly attempting to sow chaos in our state,” Aliero added.
The caucus reaffirmed that Kebbi State remains one of the most peaceful in Nigeria, attributing this to deliberate investments in security and collaboration with relevant agencies.
They urged security agencies not to be distracted by Malami’s “alarmist petition,” but instead invite him to substantiate his claims.
“As elected representatives of the people, we stand firmly behind Governor Idris and remain committed to peace, democracy, and good governance in Kebbi State,” the lawmakers declared.
Senator Garba Musa Maidoki (Kebbi South) also weighed in, challenging Malami to provide proof of his allegations.
“Malami’s house is less than 50 meters away from the APC secretariat. If APC were a violent party, clashes would have occurred long ago. His claims are only meant to provoke and mislead,” Maidoki said.
He further praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in tackling insecurity across Nigeria, noting that several villages in his constituency once abandoned due to banditry have now been resettled.
“We reject any association with terrorism or arms importation. We are peaceful people and we will continue to support the fight against insecurity,” Maidoki stressed.
