Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has expressed concerns over the Tinubu government’s perceived preference for Lagos State. Kwankwaso alleged that Lagos is attempting to dominate other regions, particularly Kano, due to the significant support it receives from the central government.

During a speech at the convocation ceremony of Skyline University in Kano, Kwankwaso claimed that Lagos is interfering in Kano’s internal matters, including the selection of its emir. He stated, “Today, we can see very clearly that there are significant efforts from the Lagos axis to colonise this part of the country. Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose even our Emir; instead, they want to impose their own Emir on Kano.”

Kwankwaso’s comments were directed at President Tinubu, whom he accused of allowing Lagos to interfere in other states’ affairs. He emphasized, “Lagos today feel they only are Nigeria, interfering in other states’ affairs. We will not tolerate such actions here in Kano.”

The concerns raised by Kwankwaso reflect a deeper issue of alleged regional imbalance in governance and traditional institutions under the current administration. Many believe that the Tinubu administration has given undue attention to Lagos State, with numerous high-value projects being awarded to the state, potentially to the detriment of other states.
