The lingering insecurity concerns in the South-East region of Nigeria may keep many indigenes residing outside the area from returning home for Christmas and New Year celebrations. This grim prediction was made by Obinna Ichita, a former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, who represented Aba South Constituency.
Ichita’s statement, made available to journalists in Umuahia, condemned the killing of security agents and civilians in the South-East. He challenged the leaders of the region to break their silence and address the pressing security concerns. Ichita questioned why the leaders, who enjoy the protection of expensive ballistic-proof vehicles, seem unconcerned about the plight of their constituents.
The former Abia lawmaker appealed to President Bola Tinubu to initiate the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Ichita believes that Kanu’s release would not only portray the President as a unifying force but also demonstrate Nigeria’s ability to resolve internal conflicts without external intervention.
Ichita’s concerns are echoed by many who have cancelled their planned trips to the East due to the rising incidents of kidnapping and attacks on security operatives. The South-East leaders’ inaction on the security challenges has raised questions about their commitment to the welfare and safety of their people.
