Herdsmen Unleash Terror, youth leader Kill In Cross River Communities

By Pedro Ayobami

A disturbing trend of violence has emerged in Okoyong Usanga Abasi, Ikot Essien, and Atang Mbakara Okoyong communities in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. Herdsmen, accompanied by thousands of cattle, have allegedly occupied farmlands, destroying crops and sparking fear among community members.

The situation took a dire turn when a community youth leader was attacked at his residence, sustaining severe machete wounds. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, managed to escape but suffered deep cuts on his head and body. This incident has sent shockwaves throughout the community, prompting many to flee to the forests in fear of further attacks.

According to sources, the conflict began when community elders accepted money from one Alhaji, permitting the herdsmen to graze their cattle in the communities. However, the cows have ravaged crops, and when confronted, the herdsmen claimed Alhaji had paid for everything. Community members, who had initially resisted the invading cattle, were met with violence from the herdsmen.

Madam Emem, a resident of the affected community, expressed her frustration, stating that they can no longer access their farms due to the herders blocking the roads. This has resulted in significant economic losses for the community.

Alhaji Ibrahim Musa, a leader of the Hausa/Fulani community in Ntan Obu, Odukpani LGA, denied any wrongdoing, claiming that they live peacefully with the host community and have kept their cows under control, respecting the value of economic crops.

Mr. Richard Inoyo, founder of the Civil Society group Citizens’ Solution Network in Cross River, confirmed that his organization received a call from the Onoyong community, reporting herdsmen attacks and the destruction of farmlands worth N15 million.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, stated that the police have not been briefed but would launch an investigation once security reports confirm the situation.
