The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has formally recognized Chief Tony Okocha, a close ally of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, as the leader of the party in Rivers State. This declaration was made during the inauguration of the newly elected state executive committee of the party in Port Harcourt.
Ganduje congratulated the newly elected members and explained that the party’s decision to hold the inauguration in Rivers State, rather than at the APC National Headquarters in Abuja, was a deliberate move to strengthen ties between the national and state leadership. He emphasized the importance of unity and cohesion between the two structures, ensuring that the party speaks with one voice.
The APC national chairman charged the state executive committee to prioritize internal democracy, highlighting it as a cornerstone of their responsibilities. He also underscored the importance of fostering unity and inclusiveness within the party at the state level, encouraging members to work together towards a common goal.
Ganduje noted that the APC has made significant progress in the South-South geopolitical zone, traditionally dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He cited the party’s control of Cross River and Edo states as evidence of this progress, and declared Rivers State as the party’s next strategic target in its expansion efforts in the region.
