France has categorically denied the allegation made by Niger Republic that Nigeria had offered its territory to France as a base to destabilize the former French colony.
The French government described the claim as “groundless” and emphasized that such a discussion had never taken place between France and Nigeria. Bertrand de Seissan, Political Counsellor to the Embassy of France in Nigeria,
stated in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the allegation was baseless and had never been suggested by either France or Nigeria. This denial comes after Nigerien military leader Abdourahamane Tchiani alleged that France was negotiating with terrorists in Nigeria to destabilize his country.
Tchiani had claimed that France made a “substantial payment” to President Bola Tinubu to establish a military base in Nigeria. He also alleged that France had met and negotiated with Boko Haram/Lakurawa, a terrorist group in Nigeria.
However, these claims have been dismissed by France as unfounded and untrue. The allegation had sparked concerns about the relationship between France and its former colonies in West Africa.
However, France’s denial of the claim has helped to alleviate some of these concerns. The incident highlights the need for accurate information and communication to prevent the spread of misinformation and to maintain healthy relationships between nations.
