In a bid to further transform Nigeria’s transportation system, the Federal Government is poised to embark on the highly anticipated Lagos-Abuja Super Highway/High-Speed Train Project, with a projected commencement date of February 2025.
This monumental project, valued at $16 billion, promises to revolutionize the country’s transportation landscape, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the overall quality of life for Nigerians.
Engineer Mutiu Yinka Idris, Director of Operations at AEC-Geofocus, the consortium of engineers, planners, and investors handling the project, provided insight into the project’s scope and benefits.
According to Idris, the project will span 500 kilometers, connecting Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. The project will adopt a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) model, ensuring a seamless and efficient execution process.
The project’s high-speed train component will boast a double-gauge rail line, capable of reaching speeds of up to 250 km/hr. The train will have two main stations in Lagos and Abuja, as well as 11 intermediate stops, reducing travel time between Lagos and Abuja to under
3 hours by rail and under 5 hours by road. The highway component will feature 8 lanes, 2 service lanes, and 13 tolling points, ensuring a safe and efficient travel experience. The project will also incorporate several smart cities, 1 million housing units, and an Independent Power
Plant, further enhancing the quality of life for Nigerians. Engineer Idris emphasized that this project is a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s transportation system and enhancing the economic well-being of the citizens.
