The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in recognition of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon. This decision was made during a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu, as revealed by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris.
Idris explained that the proposal to rename the university would be forwarded to the National Assembly for formal approval. He stated, “The Federal Assisted Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja in honour of elder statesman General Yakubu Gowon, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. The processing will involve legislation in that direction, and FEC has decided to write to the National Assembly to effect the name change.”
The renaming is a tribute to General Gowon’s contributions to the country, and the university will henceforth be known as Yakubu Gowon University. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to recognizing and honouring notable figures who have shaped Nigeria’s history.
