The Federal Government of Nigeria has made a significant investment in airport power infrastructure, allocating N8.73 billion in 2024 to ensure a consistent electricity supply at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. This expenditure, highlighted in a report by BudgIT’s GovSpend, primarily focuses on powering the new international terminal.
The report reveals that substantial payments were made to J. Marine Logistics Ltd for outsourced power supply, including:
N5.67 billion for power supply between March and September 2023
N2.19 billion on May 9, 2024, for services covering October to November 2023 and part of December 2023
N874.42 million as part payment for power during the same period
This investment comes amid concerns over epileptic power supply at the airport, which has impacted critical services such as airfield lighting, baggage handling systems, and security scanning equipment.
Aviation expert Olumide Odunayo commended the government’s efforts but emphasized the need for a more sustainable approach. “The airport should build an alternative power source, probably using a solar system or windmill,” he suggested.
Odunayo also highlighted the high costs associated with the current power arrangements, which rely on electricity distribution networks and diesel-powered generators. He advocated for a transition to renewable energy sources, such as solar or wind power, to reduce costs and provide a more reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply.
The Federal Government has also allocated N105.95 billion for the aviation industry in the 2025 budget, with N5 billion earmarked for power and energy improvements at airports in Lagos, Abuja, and other locations.
