The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has called out Amnesty International (AI) for its publication titled “Bloody August: Nigeria Government’s Violent Crackdown on and Bad Governance Protests”. The Police have demanded an immediate retraction and public apology, stating that the report contains numerous unsubstantiated claims that falsely accuse the NPF of human rights violations, police brutality, and excessive violence during the August 2024 End Bad Governance protests ¹.*Police Response to Allegations*According to Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the NPF has carefully reviewed and investigated the allegations, categorically rejecting them as baseless and entirely false. Adejobi emphasized that the Police acted with restraint and professionalism during the protests, adhering to global best practices and using minimal force where necessary.*Consequences of Amnesty’s Report*The NPF believes that Amnesty’s misleading publication undermines the trust and confidence it has worked to build with Nigerian citizens and residents. The report also harms the reputation of the organization and demoralizes its officers who risk their lives to protect the public.*Ultimatum to Amnesty International*The NPF has given Amnesty International seven days to issue a formal retraction and public apology. Failure to comply will prompt the NPF to consider legal actions to protect its reputation.
