In a recent development, the Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the release of 11 out of 18 travelers kidnapped by gunmen along the Emure-Ile/Emure Road, at the border between Ondo and Ekiti States, last Sunday night. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, revealed that efforts are underway to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining 7 victims.
The kidnapped victims were returning from Onitsha, Anambra State to Ekiti State when the gunmen struck, demanding a ransom of N30 million on each victim. The driver, Sunday Emmanuel, was also kidnapped alongside the passengers. In a bizarre twist, the kidnappers abandoned some children in the bus, whose cries attracted the attention of passersby, leading to the report of the incident at the nearest police station.
There were conflicting reports about the actual location of the incident, with some sources claiming it occurred at Emure-Owo in Ondo State, while others stated it happened in Emure-Ekiti, headquarters of Emure local government area of Ekiti State. However, a top security source in the State revealed that the incident actually took place in the Owo-Eporo Road axis, with joint efforts by Amotekun in Ondo and Ekiti states underway to rescue the remaining victims.
The Ekiti State Police Command has reassured the public that they are working tirelessly to ensure the safe release of the remaining victims. The Command has also urged the public to provide any information that may lead to the arrest of the kidnappers and the rescue of the victims.
