EFCC Vows to Respect Court Ruling Stopping Arrest of Awka Anglican Bishop Alexander Ibezim

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared its commitment to obey a court order

restraining the agency from arresting, detaining, or prosecuting the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr.

Alexander Ibezim. The anti-graft agency made this known following reports that the cleric was under investigation for alleged

financial irregularities linked to certain diocesan transactions. The EFCC, however, clarified that while it remains dedicated to

carrying out its constitutional mandate of fighting corruption, it would operate strictly within the confines of the law and in full

respect of judicial directives. In a statement issued on Friday, the EFCC reaffirmed its recognition of the rule of law as a

fundamental principle guiding its operations. “The Commission wishes to state categorically that it will comply with

the restraining order issued by the Federal High Court regarding Bishop Alexander Ibezim. The EFCC operates within legal

frameworks and does not act in defiance of court orders,” the statement read. The Federal High Court sitting in Awka had

earlier granted an interim order barring the EFCC, the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies from arresting or

harassing the cleric pending the determination of a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by Bishop

Ibezim.Supporters of the bishop have since expressed relief over the EFCC’s latest position, describing it as a sign of

respect for the judiciary and a victory for justice. Some members of the Anglican community in Awka Diocese also praised

the development, noting that the Church stands for truth and integrity. Legal experts, however, have urged both parties

to maintain decorum while the case is being resolved in court, warning against actions that could be viewed as contempt

or obstruction of justice. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to due process, assuring the public that all its

investigations and prosecutions would continue to adhere to constitutional and judicial guidelines.
