In a tragic and disturbing case, Obinna Eze has been sentenced to death by hanging for the brutal murder of six-month-old baby Chimaobi Igwe. The Delta State High Court, sitting at Akwukwu-igbo, delivered the verdict after finding Eze guilty of attempted murder, murder, and causing grievous bodily harm.
The prosecution, led by State Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Omamuzo Erebe, presented a strong case against Eze. The prosecution called three witnesses, including the baby’s mother, Mrs. Blessing Igwe, and Dr. Emmanuel Egbuduka, a pathologist who conducted the autopsy.
According to Mrs. Igwe’s testimony, the dispute began over a missing phone belonging to Eze, her co-tenant at Talitha Street, off Okpanam Road, Asaba. The situation escalated, and Eze attacked her and her baby with a cutlass, inflicting severe injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the baby succumbed to his injuries a week later.
Dr. Egbuduka’s autopsy report revealed that the baby’s death was caused by three deep penetrating injuries to the head, consistent with a sharp object like a cutlass. The prosecution also presented Eze’s confessional statement, which implicated him in the crime.
In his judgment, Hon Justice Marcel Okoh stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The court rejected Eze’s denial and retraction of his confessional statement, finding him guilty of murder.
The sentence handed down by the court reflects the severity of the crime and the need to protect society from such heinous acts. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of justice and accountability in our society.
