The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has assured Nigerians that there is no need to panic following the recent deployment of drones by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (BH/ISWAP) terrorists to attack troops’ locations. According to the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, the drones used by the terrorists are not military-graded and should not be a cause for alarm.
Speaking during a media briefing on Friday, General Buba likened the drones to “toys” used by the terrorists to harass troops, emphasizing that they are not capable of launching effective attacks. He, however, acknowledged that the military is taking measures to counter the new trend.
“We are in a war against terrorists and insurgents, and the use of drones in the battlefield is not new,” General Buba explained. “But we want to assure Nigerians that we are on top of the situation, and there is no need for unnecessary panic.”
The Defence Headquarters also used the opportunity to debunk rumors of a foreign military base in Nigeria. General Buba stated categorically that there is no foreign base in the country, and Nigeria has refused to be a ground for proxy war.
“We don’t have any foreign base, and we don’t want our country to be a ground for proxy war,” he emphasized. “We are committed to maintaining the sovereignty and integrity of our nation, and we will not allow any foreign power to use our territory for their own interests.”
The Defence Headquarters urged Nigerians to remain calm and confident in the ability of the military to protect them. With the festive season still ongoing, the DHQ assured that it is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
