A significant change is on the horizon for councils in Nigeria, as they are expected to start receiving direct allocation from the Federation Account beginning next month. According to a source, this development will commence with the disbursement of this month’s allocation to the three tiers of government.

The source revealed that the necessary arrangements have been put in place to facilitate the direct allocation to councils. This move is expected to enhance the financial autonomy of councils and enable them to execute projects and programs more efficiently.

The Federation Account is a pool of funds generated from various sources, including crude oil sales, taxes, and other revenue streams. The account is managed by the federal government, which allocates funds to the three tiers of government – federal, state, and local governments.

The direct allocation to councils is a welcome development, as it will reduce the burden on state governments and enable councils to take charge of their financial affairs. This move is also expected to promote transparency and accountability in the management of council funds.

As the country prepares for this new development, it is essential for stakeholders to be aware of the implications and benefits of direct allocation to councils. With this change, councils are expected to play a more significant role in the development of their areas, and Nigerians can look forward to improved service delivery and infrastructure development at the grassroots level.
