Osun State’s Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) has taken a bold step in petitioning the Police Service Commission (PSC) and the Civil Defence, Correctional Fire and Immigration Board (CDCFIB), as well as
the Nigeria Security Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Junior Staff Disciplinary Committee. This move follows a disturbing altercation between Nigerian Police and NSCDC personnel in Osogbo, which resulted in assault, unlawful detention, and alleged human rights violations.
The incident, which occurred on October 23, 2024, at Elizabeth Estate, Osogbo, has sparked concerns over inter-agency rivalry and policing standards in Nigeria. According to CDHR Chairman Emmanuel Olowu, the confrontation quickly escalated into a violent exchange, culminating in the police detaining and mistreating an NSCDC officer.
The police officers, dressed in mufti, were reportedly prevented from carrying out an arrest by NSCDC personnel.
– The NSCDC personnel allegedly beat two police officers and deflated the tire of the police patrol van.
– The detained NSCDC officer was publicly assaulted, disarmed, and held in custody without justifiable grounds.
The CDHR has called for an independent investigation, citing provisions within the Police Service Commission (Establishment) Act. They advocate for a probe free from potential biases and emphasize the need for oversight beyond the Nigerian Police.
The human rights group also highlights a growing history of police misconduct and inter-agency tensions, referencing past incidents like the #EndSARS movement. They warn that unchecked law enforcement powers can lead to increased vulnerability for civilians.
Transparent and joint accountability to prevent future confrontations.
By taking a firm stance, the CDHR aims to promote accountability and transparency within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
