In a sweeping move aimed at enhancing governmental efficiency, the President of Nigeria has announced a significant reshuffle of the Federal Executive Council, resulting in ministerial reassignments, discharges, and new appointments. The decision comes as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to set the country on a path of irreversible growth and ensure that key sectors are aligned with the government’s priorities.
Merger of Ministries: A key highlight of the reshuffle is the merger of the Federal Ministry of Tourism with the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture. This move creates a new entity—the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy—which is expected to bolster Nigeria’s creative and tourism sectors by streamlining operations and fostering growth in the nation’s cultural landscape.
Reassignments and New Ministerial Roles: As part of the shake-up, ten ministers have been reassigned to new portfolios, while five ministers have been discharged from their duties. Among the notable reassignments is Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, previously the Minister of State for Education, who has now been appointed as the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. Dr. Morufu Olatunji Alausa, who served as Minister of State for Health, now takes on the role of Minister of Education.
Other key changes include:
Barr. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, reassigned from Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation to Minister of State for Works.
Hon. Abubakar Eshiokpekha Momoh, formerly the Minister of Niger Delta Development, now appointed as the Minister of Regional Development.
Seven New Ministers Nominated: The President also nominated seven new ministers, whose appointments are pending Senate confirmation. Among them are Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, who will head the Federal Ministry of Labour & Employment, and Bianca Odinaka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who takes on the role of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. These new appointees are expected to bring fresh perspectives to their respective ministries.
Additionally, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole has been appointed as Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, while Idi Mukhtar Maiha will serve as the Minister of Livestock Development—a newly established ministry aimed at revitalizing the livestock sector.
Strategic Appointments: In a strategic move to improve national communication and orientation, Shehu Dikko has been appointed as the Chairman of the National Sports Commission. Sunday Akin Dare has also been named Special Adviser to the President on Public Communication and Orientation, with responsibilities at the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
The President thanked the outgoing ministers for their service and encouraged the newly appointed and reassigned ministers to embrace their roles as an opportunity to serve the nation. He urged them to invest their best efforts in achieving the administration’s goals, emphasizing the government’s determination to propel Nigeria toward sustainable growth and development.
This reshuffle reflects the administration’s eagerness to strengthen key sectors and ensure that the nation’s governance structure is aligned with the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
