The Imo State Government has officially commenced the payment of a new minimum wage of N104,000 to civil servants across the state, marking a
significant milestone in Governor Hope Uzodimma’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and boosting economic stability within the state.
The new wage implementation, which began in early October 2025, follows the Governor’s earlier promise to review salaries in line with current economic realities and the rising cost of living in the country.
The development positions Imo as one of the first states in Nigeria to implement such a substantial wage increase for its workforce.In a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and
Strategy, Hon. Declan Emelumba, the government said the new minimum wage was part of a broader economic reform designed to ensure that workers enjoy a
fair standard of living and remain motivated in the discharge of their duties.> “Governor Hope Uzodimma has consistently demonstrated his passion for workers’ welfare.
The payment of N104,000 as the new minimum wage reflects his administration’s commitment to ensuring that civil servants are adequately
compensated, especially at this critical time when Nigerians are facing economic challenges,” Emelumba said. He explained that the new wage structure would apply to all categories of civil servants in the state,
including core ministries, parastatals, and agencies. According to him, payment has already begun, and many workers have confirmed receiving their new salaries.
Civil servants across the state have since expressed excitement and appreciation to the governor for fulfilling his promise. A worker at the Imo State Ministry of Health,
who simply identified herself as Chinyere, described the gesture as “a life-saving decision” that would greatly ease the burden of high food prices, transportation costs, and general living
expenses.Similarly, a representative of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Imo State Chapter, commended the government for taking a bold and progressive step, urging other states to emulate the example set by Imo.
The NLC also appealed to the government to ensure that the wage increase is sustained and not limited to political seasons.The new wage comes amid rising
inflation and increasing cost of essential commodities across the country. Governor Uzodimma’s administration said the decision was not only a response to the
economic crisis but also a reflection of its belief that workers remain the engine of government service delivery and productivity. Analysts believe the move could have a positive ripple effect on Imo’s
economy, as higher disposable income among workers is expected to boost local spending and stimulate small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) across
the state.Governor Uzodimma also reaffirmed his administration’s ongoing reforms in other sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure,
stressing that the welfare of workers will remain a top priority throughout his tenure.The Imo State Government’s decision to implement the N104,000
