In a brazen attack, bandits hijacked a pickup van and made off with a valuable cargo of foodstuff, drinks, and bottled water in Akoti village, Kagarko local government area of Kaduna State. This incident occurred merely 48 hours after another group of bandits snatched foodstuffs and drinks from a motorcyclist in the same area.
According to eyewitnesses, the bandits, armed with AK-47 rifles, emerged from the forest and flagged down the pickup van. They deflated some of the tires and diverted the vehicle into the forest, where they proceeded to unload the cargo. The stolen goods included bags of rice, jerrycans of vegetable oil, energy drinks, and bottled water.
The owner of the cargo, a resident of Jere, was headed to Akoti village when the bandits struck. Fortunately, the driver and his conductor were released unharmed after the bandits made off with the goods.
ASP Hassan Mansur, the spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, has yet to confirm the incident. However, sources from the area have corroborated the details of the attack.
This incident highlights the growing concern of banditry and food insecurity in the region. The frequent attacks on food convoys and markets have resulted in shortages and price hikes, exacerbating the already dire economic situation.
