Arsenal’s title challenge is well and truly back on track after a blistering 5-2 win against West Ham United at the London Stadium. Mikel Arteta’s side ran riot in the first half, scoring five times to move six points behind leaders Liverpool, who host Manchester City on Sunday.
The Gunners’ title hopes had been badly damaged by a run of four league games without a win prior to beating Nottingham Forest last weekend. However, this victory, combined with their 5-1 thrashing of Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League on Tuesday, is further evidence that Arteta’s team is back on track.
Arsenal’s first top-flight away win since September was a timely reminder that the team who pushed Manchester City to the brink in the title race last term should not be written off with over half the season left. Chasing a first title since 2004, Arsenal have been revitalized by the return of captain Martin Odegaard, who was sidelined for 12 matches in all competitions with an ankle injury.
Since Odegaard was restored to the starting line-up, Arsenal have gone unbeaten in four successive games, with Manchester United due to visit the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday. West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui had lifted some of the mounting pressure on him with Monday’s win at Newcastle. However, Arteta showed no mercy as Arsenal seized control in an astonishing first half.
The visitors struck five times in the opening 45 minutes, with Gabriel Magalhaes, Leandro Trossard, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Bukayo Saka all finding the back of the net. West Ham’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Emerson scored consolation goals, but it was too little, too late for the hosts.
Arteta’s side has been praised for their attacking flair, and this victory was another example of their ability to score goals. With Odegaard, Saka, and Trossard all in top form, Arsenal’s title challenge is looking increasingly strong.
As the season reaches its halfway point, Arsenal’s victory over West Ham is a timely reminder of their title credentials. With Liverpool and Manchester City set to face off on Sunday, the Premier League title race is heating up, and Arsenal are firmly in the mix.
