Senate President Godswill Akpabio has shed light on the National Assembly’s overwhelming support for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to establish regional development commissions. According to Akpabio, the commissions are designed to facilitate the cascade of empowerment to the grassroots level, ensuring that development reaches all regions of Nigeria.

Akpabio, who represents Ikot Ekpene (Akwa Ibom Northwest) senatorial district in Akwa Ibom State, made this disclosure during his 2024 Empowerment/Constituency briefing, held at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium. He emphasized that the 10th National Assembly firmly believes in the importance of grassroots development.

The Senate President commended the people of his senatorial district for their massive support for President Tinubu, noting that over 119,000 out of 160,000 votes for the president came from his district. Akpabio urged the people of South South and South East to continue supporting Tinubu’s administration, highlighting the president’s commitment to the development of both regions.

Akpabio cited the signing of the South East Development Commission into law as a testament to the president’s love for the region. He also pointed out that key ministries have been allocated based on needs rather than votes, with the South East receiving the Ministry of Works, among others.

The Senate President expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for supporting the South South region, particularly Akwa Ibom State, which has been allocated the Ministry of Petroleum Resources (Gas). Akpabio noted that this decision reflects the president’s recognition of the state’s vast gas reserves and its potential for future growth.

During the empowerment briefing, Akpabio distributed various items to the ten local government areas within his senatorial district. These items included power generators, sewing and grinding machines, block moulding machines, cassava processing machines, cars, mini buses, tricycles, tractors, bags of rice, freezers, and Hilux vans.

Akpabio’s efforts to empower his constituents and promote grassroots development align with the National Assembly’s support for President Tinubu’s regional development commissions. As Nigeria continues to navigate its development challenges, initiatives like these aim to bring tangible benefits to the country’s diverse regions and communities.
