A 28-year-old nurse, Ruth Auta, who made a devastating decision that cost her baby’s life. On December 20, 2022, Ruth left her 10-week-old son, Joshua, alone in her nurses’ accommodation at the Royal Bolton Hospital to go to work. She returned over eight hours later to find him unresponsive. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, Joshua was pronounced dead at 16:40.
Ruth’s actions were deemed grossly negligent, and she was sentenced to three years in prison for child cruelty. The court heard that Joshua was a healthy baby, and the exact cause of death couldn’t be determined. However, it’s believed that he may have overheated due to excessive clothing and bedding.
What’s even more shocking is that Ruth tried to cover her tracks by lying to the police and attempting to flee the country. She initially claimed that she had collected Joshua from a childminder and found him unresponsive after falling asleep next to him. However, CCTV footage and messages on her phone revealed the truth.
As a nurse, Ruth should have known the dangers of leaving her baby unattended. Her actions demonstrate a lack of remorse and a blatant disregard for her child’s well-being. Source: BBC
