Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on the intriguing history surrounding the selection of Ogun State’s capital.
According to Obasanjo, Ijebu leaders engaged in intense lobbying efforts, persuading General Murtala Mohammed, the then-Head of State, to designate Sagamu as the state capital.
Obasanjo recounted this fascinating episode during the induction ceremony and gala night of the Egba Legacy Network, held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
He revealed that the Ijebu leaders had launched a vigorous campaign against Abeokuta being named the state capital, citing concerns about land availability.
However, Obasanjo’s intervention proved pivotal in reversing the decision. He recalled confronting General Murtala, asserting that if Sagamu were to become the capital, Rago should logically become the capital of Kano State.
This bold stance ultimately led to Abeokuta being declared the capital of Ogun State. This captivating anecdote offers a glimpse into the complex dynamics that shaped the creation of Ogun State. Established on February 3, 1976, Ogun State was carved out of the former Western State by General Murtala Mohammed’s regime.
