The Sudanese army has secured a significant win in the nearly two-year-long conflict against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), capturing the strategic city of Wad Madani in central Sudan. This vital transportation hub, located 140 km south of Khartoum, connects major supply routes across Sudan, making it a crucial asset in the war ¹.The city’s residents celebrated as Sudanese soldiers entered, marking one of the army’s most significant triumphs since the conflict began in April 2023. RSF leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, admitted defeat, attributing it to the army’s superior air capabilities, including Iranian-made drones.Despite the setback, Hemedti vowed to continue fighting, stating, “We are prepared to wage war for decades if necessary.” The conflict has ravaged Sudan, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, over nine million displaced people, and nearly half the population requiring urgent food assistance.*Current Control and International Efforts*The RSF retains control of western Darfur and parts of southern Sudan, while the army dominates the north, east, and parts of Khartoum. The United States recently imposed sanctions on Hemedti and RSF, accusing them of committing genocide and systemic atrocities against civilians.
