The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has come out to refute claims made in an online video that it demolished a building located at 1A Olubunmi Owa Street, Off Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1, Eti-Osa, Lagos. The agency’s General Manager, Mr. Gbolahan Oki, denied the allegations, stating that the removal of an attachment to the building was actually carried out by the property owner. According to Oki, the owner’s actions were illegal and did not follow proper procedures, as they lacked the necessary permits. LASBCA had instructed the owner to remove the illegal attachment after serving multiple notices, including convention, seal-off, and quit notices.The agency’s officials discovered the illegal demolition during a routine enforcement exercise and encountered resistance from some occupants of the building who had not complied with building laws. Oki emphasized that the circulating video aimed to mislead the public, showing an individual harassing and obstructing LASBCA officials.Despite the allegations, LASBCA remains committed to urban regeneration and adherence to building regulations. The agency pledges to continue ensuring a safe and sustainable Lagos State, despite any attempts to distort facts.It’s worth noting that this is not the first time LASBCA has been involved in a controversy surrounding building demolitions. In the past, the agency has demolished distressed buildings in Lagos, citing safety concerns and the need for urban regeneration.
