The Department of State Services (DSS) has recorded significant successes in its recent operations against the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Eastern Security Network (ESN), and bandits in Niger State. According to top security sources, the DSS has neutralized several IPOB and ESN members, as well as many bandits, in various parts of the country. The improved security situation in the South-East geopolitical zone during the Yuletide season has been attributed to several covert operations by the DSS. A top police operative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, commended the new DSS leadership for its increased synergy with other security agencies, which has led to prompt intelligence sharing and successful operations.
Operations Against IPOB and ESN
The DSS identified and dismantled several IPOB and ESN camps in the South-East states, including Imo, Enugu, Abia, Anambra, and Ebonyi. In Imo State, the DSS cleared IPOB/ESN strongholds in Orsu, Oru East, Oru West, and Orlu LGA, destroying several AK47 weapons, IED-making materials, and shrines. In Enugu, the DSS led an operation to clear the Imilike Agu Forest in Udenu LGA, destroying several weapons and neutralizing a large number of IPOB/ESN commanders.
Operations Against Bandits in Niger State
The DSS launched a major offensive against AK-47-wielding bandits operating on motorcycles in Rafi LGA, killing many and seizing their cache of weapons and motorcycles. This is the second major operation by the DSS against bandits in Niger State in less than a week, following the neutralization of three bandits in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga LGA. The DSS had also apprehended notorious bandits terrorizing parts of the North-East and North-West in Zamfara and Borno states.
