Renowned political economist and former presidential aspirant, Prof. Pat Utomi, has lambasted the Nigerian government for its condescending attitude towards the younger generation. In a candid interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily,’ Utomi asserted that the government’s lack of trustworthiness has led to a breakdown in communication with the youth.
Utomi’s comments came in response to President Bola Tinubu’s forthcoming National Youth Conference, which he believes may not yield the desired results without a concerted effort to build trust. “There are models of how you build trust,” Utomi explained. “But the first thing is by you doing the right thing and building up what they call emotional bank account.”
He further emphasized that trust is built when leaders follow through on their promises, making deposits in the emotional bank account. Conversely, when leaders fail to deliver, they make withdrawals, ultimately eroding their credibility. Unfortunately, Utomi noted, the Nigerian government has consistently failed to inspire trust, treating young people like idiots in the process.
This sentiment is particularly poignant, given Nigeria’s history of youthful leadership during military rule. As Utomi pointed out, many of the country’s leaders during that era were in their 20s and 30s. However, the influx of oil revenues and the hierarchical structure of the military contributed to the emergence of a new class system, which has persisted to this day.
Utomi’s scathing critique of the government’s treatment of youths has sparked a necessary conversation about the need for greater accountability and transparency. As the country prepares for the National Youth Conference, it remains to be seen whether the government will take heed of Utomi’s words and work towards rebuilding trust with the younger generation.
