President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that rumors of a disagreement between him and state governors over local government autonomy are entirely false. Speaking during a New Year homage by Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos, President Tinubu emphasized the critical role of state governors in driving Nigeria’s development and prosperity.
Emphasizing Collaboration and Local Government Autonomy
The President stressed that state governors are the most important link to Nigeria’s prosperity and development, highlighting their leadership at the subnational level as central to achieving food security, economic prosperity, and rapid national growth. He expressed gratitude for their support and collaboration, emphasizing key areas requiring joint effort for the nation’s progress.
“The Federal Government accounts for about 30 to 35 percent of the allocated revenue; the rest comes to you,” Tinubu said. “The agricultural value chain depends on you. You own the land, and the job is in your hands.” He urged governors to prioritize agricultural growth as a pathway to economic stability, emphasizing the need for consistent effort from all stakeholders.
Commitment to Local Government Development and Autonomy
President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to local government development and autonomy, stressing its importance for grassroots development. He dispelled rumors of disagreement with the governors, saying, “We will not fight within us. I will drive the change. You control your local governments. You can restore hope by effectively fulfilling what the people expect at the grassroots level.”
