Nasir El-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, has responded to allegations made by Farooq Kperogi, a Nigerian professor of journalism based in the United States. Kperogi accused President Bola Tinubu of ethnic favouritism in his appointments, specifically pointing out the dominance of Yoruba people in key positions at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In an article titled “Tinubu’s Buharisation of the NNPC,” Kperogi claimed that an anonymous source revealed plans to appoint Bayo Ojulari as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of NNPCL after Mele Kyari’s term expires. Kperogi also drew parallels between Tinubu’s appointments and those of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was accused of favouring northerners during his tenure.
El-Rufai reacted to Kperogi’s article on X, stating that “two wrongs do not make a right.” He advocated for sensible inclusion over arrogant exclusion, emphasizing that the latter approach only leads to further division and inequality. “Sensible inclusion always trumps arrogant exclusion,” El-Rufai said.
El-Rufai’s response highlights the need for a more inclusive approach to appointments, one that prioritizes merit and diversity over ethnic or regional considerations. By promoting sensible inclusion, El-Rufai aims to encourage a more equitable distribution of opportunities and resources.
