A devastating fire outbreak occurred at Afia Nkwo Market, Isiama Ohafia, in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, destroying shops and goods worth millions of naira. The incident happened on Friday morning, leaving traders and shop owners in a state of despair, particularly as they had restocked their shops for the Christmas and New Year sales season.
Some of the Victims of the fire outbreak who expressed their sadness to Spyronews and frustration, lamenting the loss of their livelihoods. They appealed to the Abia State government to provide assistance and support to mitigate their losses.
In response to the tragic incident, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, who is an indigene of Ohafia, who to Our reporter commiserated with the victims and expressed deep sorrow over the fire outbreak. Emetu promised to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the affected area to determine the extent of the damage and explore possible support and rehabilitation of the market infrastructure.
Emetu noted that while the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, the government assures all stakeholders that necessary measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. The safety and well-being of Abia citizens and residents remain a top priority for the government.
This incident is not the first fire outbreak to affect markets in Abia State. Previous incidents have occurred in markets such as Ariaria International Market and Asa Nnentu Spare Parts Market. The Abia State government has decried the incessant fire outbreaks in markets and urged traders and other market users to take necessary precautions to prevent such incidents.
