A shocking case of theft has unfolded in Osun State, as a mother, Ayanda Olubunmi, 45, and her two sons, Joshua Iyanda, 24, and Prosper Iyanda, 21, have been remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre for allegedly stealing cocoa beans valued at ₦4.5 million. The Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo issued the remand order on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, following their arraignment on charges of conspiracy and theft.
The prosecution alleged that the suspects stole the cocoa beans from the residence of Akeem Obidiran in Temidire Village, Oriade local government area of Osun State. The stolen goods were recovered by the Osun Amotekun Corps after the suspects attempted to sell them. The defendants reportedly confessed to the crime during their interrogation and in court, stating that it was their first offence.
Magistrate A. O. Odeleye of the Magistrate Court 3 Osogbo emphasized the severity of the offence, stating that “theft of this magnitude is a serious offence that affects livelihoods and the economy.” The court must ensure justice is served to deter others. The suspects pleaded for leniency, citing desperation as the motivation for their actions.
The case has been adjourned until January 29, 2025, to allow the prosecution sufficient time to prepare its case. The Amotekun Corps’ swift action led to the suspects’ apprehension, and the court’s decision to remand them underscores the commitment to upholding justice and protecting the community.
