The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has issued a stern warning to security agents at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos to desist from extorting passengers or face severe punishment ¹.
Kuku emphasized that the penalties for such actions would be stiff, and she has video evidence of extortion incidents. She urged Aviation Security (AVSEC) officers to engage with passengers professionally and refrain from requesting money from them.
The FAAN MD expressed concern about the negative impact of extortion on the country’s image, stating that investors and passengers alike are complaining about the harassment they face at the airport ². She noted that the airport is often the first point of contact for visitors to Nigeria, and the experience they have there can shape their perception of the country.
Kuku also addressed the issue of some security agents claiming that they are not receiving pensions and are therefore forced to extort money from passengers. She made it clear that this is unacceptable and that the practice must stop immediately ³.
The FAAN MD warned that if any organization is found wanting, it will be seen as a failure of leadership, and she will not hesitate to take action. She emphasized that the airport is not a place for security agents to make money and that anyone found engaging in extortion will face stiff penalties.
