In a recent briefing, Defence Headquarters spokesman, Major-General Edward Buba, revealed the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lukarawas, operating in Sokoto and Kebbi states in Nigeria’s Northwest region. According to Gen. Buba, the group is affiliated with Islamic State (ISIS) and originated from Niger Republic.
As reported by Spyronews, Gen. Buba stated that Lukarawas exploited gaps in cooperation between Nigeria and Niger Republic, taking advantage of difficult terrains to spread their ideology. Initially, locals accommodated the group, failing to report their presence to security operatives until they began causing havoc.
“We are already going after them, and we will take them out,” Gen. Buba assured, emphasizing that troops have sustained Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) to degrade the terrorists.
Lukarawas’ emergence marks the first incursion of Sahelian jihadists into Nigeria. The group’s activities follow the coup in Niger Republic, which led to a breakdown in military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.
Nigeria has grappled with terrorism since 2009 when Boko Haram launched its operations in Borno State. The military continues to battle the group, while also addressing banditry in the Northwest.
In a related development, the Defence Headquarters declared nine terrorists wanted in the Northeast. Gen. Buba urged the public to provide information leading to their arrest.
During last month’s operations, troops neutralized 481 terrorists, arrested 741 criminals, rescued 492 kidnap victims, recovered 480 weapons, and 9,026 ammunition.
Gen. Buba also announced that some North central terror gang leaders are seeking to surrender, and the military has opened corridors for their safe surrender.
