A local government official in Kogi State has been accused of allegedly ordering the release of a suspect who was arrested for
supplying fuel to bandits operating in parts of the state. According to reports, the suspect was initially apprehended by local
vigilante members for allegedly engaging in the illegal distribution of fuel to criminal elements believed to be responsible for a
series of attacks in the area. However, shortly after his arrest, the suspect was reportedly freed following alleged
interference from a top council official.Sources familiar with the matter revealed that the suspect was caught while
transporting large quantities of petrol in jerrycans, which authorities believe were meant to supply the bandits hiding in
nearby forests. The arrest was said to have been part of an ongoing effort to disrupt the logistics networks supporting armed
groups in Kogi State and neighbouring regions.The development has sparked outrage among residents and security
volunteers, who described the council official’s alleged action as a serious sabotage of security operations and a
betrayal of public trust. A member of the vigilante group, who spoke anonymously, said they were shocked when they learned
that the suspect had been released despite clear evidence linking him to the illegal activity. “We risk our lives every day trying
to secure our communities. It is disheartening that someone in authority would intervene to release a suspect who
supports those killing our people,” the source said. Security agencies in the state have reportedly been briefed about the
incident, with calls growing for a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the council official’s involvement and the
motive behind the alleged interference. Meanwhile, several civil society organizations and community leaders have
demanded accountability, urging the Kogi State Government to ensure that justice is served. They also appealed for stronger

The Kogi State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the alleged release of the suspect, but insiders
