Nigeria has reached a landmark agreement with LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd., the world’s largest solar panel
manufacturer, to establish a solar panel production facility in Nigeria. The deal was confirmed by the Energy Commission of
Nigeria (ECN) under its Director-General, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, during a delegation visit to LONGi’s headquarters in
Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China. LONGi’s leadership, including President Boshen Zhong and Vice President Li Wenxue,
hosted the Nigerian team and facilitated a tour of their advanced solar cell production facility. This engagement builds on the
earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the ECN and LONGi in London earlier this year. As part of the
plan, Nigeria aims to build a manufacturing plant with capacity between 500-1,000 megawatts (MW). This initiative is poised
to deepen the country’s participation in clean energy production, align with decentralised energy demands such as
solar mini-grids, and advance the Renewed Hope Solarisation Policy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha emphasised the
potential of localising solar panel production to reduce import dependency, lower costs of clean energy access, foster job creation, and stimulate industrial
growth across Nigeria. LONGi expressed readiness to follow through with implementation plans, technology transfer,
and establishment of necessary infrastructure. The ECN will work closely with the Federal Government to ensure this facility becomes operational, contributing
to Nigeria’s clean energy transition and helping to meet growing electricity needs while strengthening national energy security.
