The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revoked the recognition of 574 secondary schools across Nigeria, citing significant involvement in examination malpractices.
This decision effectively bars these schools from participating in the upcoming 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and any other examinations organised by WAEC.
Speaking at a press conference held at WAEC’s national headquarters in Lagos, the Head of the National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, explained that these schools had violated examination protocols to such an extent that their continued participation posed a serious risk to the integrity of the entire examination process.
“This year, we have identified 574 schools whose recognition has been withdrawn. These revocations apply to all examining bodies, meaning these schools will no longer be valid examination centres,” Dr. Dangut confirmed.
WAEC has already submitted the full list of affected schools to the Federal Government, underscoring the severity of the council’s strict stance against examination malpractice.
The schools in question, located across various states, were found guilty of offences such as aiding and abetting cheating, falsifying results, impersonation, and other serious infractions.
This move comes at a critical time, as the 2025 WASSCE, set to begin on Thursday, April 24, is expected to host 1,973,253 registered candidates from 23,554 schools. Dr. Dangut disclosed that this year’s candidate pool includes 979,228 male students and 994,025 female students, making it one of the largest groups to date.
The affected schools will no longer be allowed to serve as examination centres or operate under WAEC’s accreditation, pending further disciplinary or legal proceedings.
WAEC’s decision signals a renewed commitment to restoring the credibility of Nigeria’s academic assessments. Dr. Dangut reiterated the council’s determination to uphold the integrity of public examinations, stating, “The credibility of our exams is non-negotiable. Our mission is to protect the future of our children by ensuring that only honest and credible assessments take place.”
