The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has released disturbing statistics, revealing a 7% increase in road traffic fatalities across Nigeria in 2024. According to the FRSC, a total of 5,421 people lost their lives in road crashes throughout the country last year, up from 5,081 fatalities recorded in 2023.This alarming rise in road traffic fatalities underscores the need for urgent attention to road safety measures in Nigeria. The FRSC has consistently emphasized the importance of responsible driving habits, adherence to traffic regulations, and improved road infrastructure in reducing the incidence of road crashes.The Corps has also called on stakeholders, including state governments, local authorities, and road users, to collaborate in addressing the root causes of road traffic crashes. This includes enhancing road safety education, enforcing traffic laws, and investing in road maintenance and rehabilitation.The 2024 road traffic fatality statistics serve as a wake-up call for Nigeria to intensify efforts towards achieving the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) goals. By working together, Nigeria can reduce the number of road traffic fatalities and create safer roads for all users.
