A coalition of prominent political figures has formally submitted an application to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking the registration of a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development signals the emergence of a potential third force in Nigeria’s political space, as the group aims to provide a fresh, inclusive, and more accountable platform for citizen engagement and democratic participation.
Sources within the coalition say the initiative is driven by a shared dissatisfaction with the structure and performance of existing political parties, as well as a desire to promote a more responsive and reform-oriented political culture.
Key figures involved in the coalition include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi; former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai; convener of the League of Northern Democrats, Dr Umar Ardo; and several other political stakeholders across the country.
Initially, the group explored aligning with existing parties. Both the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) made overtures to the coalition, seeking to host the alliance under their banners.
However, members expressed concern over internal divisions and legal disputes within those platforms, which they feared could undermine unity and momentum.
Consequently, the coalition established a committee, chaired by Amaechi, to assess the feasibility of forming an entirely new party. The committee concluded its work last week, recommending the establishment of a new political platform where all members would begin on equal footing.
The formal application was delivered to INEC headquarters in Abuja earlier this week. It includes the party’s proposed name, acronym, slogan, logo, colours, manifesto, constitution, and a full list of founding members, in compliance with the requirements of the Electoral Act.
INEC’s guidelines for party registration stipulate rigorous conditions, including evidence of a national presence, a detailed party constitution, and a clear commitment to democratic values. The Commission is expected to thoroughly evaluate the submission before determining the party’s eligibility for registration.
The letter submitted to INEC was signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets, who serves as the association’s Protem National Chairman.
Titled “Application for Registration as a Political Party,” the letter reads in part:
“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA), as a political party.
“This is sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.”
“The name of the party shall be All Democratic Alliance with ADA as our acronym and ‘Justice for All’ as our slogan.”
It also specified that the party’s national secretariat is listed at the base of the association’s official letterhead.
“We have attached our logo with an explanation of the symbolism behind the party’s colours and configuration, including the maize (corn) icon,” the letter continued.
“We have further attached our manifesto, which outlines our ideological framework, and our constitution, which defines our structures, governance, and organisational principles. These documents align with Section 40 and 222 of the Constitution, Section 75 of the Electoral Act (2022), and global democratic values.”
Also attached to the submission are the party flag, meeting minutes, and other relevant documentation.
Chief Rickets concluded the letter by stating, “While we eagerly await further action from the Commission on the next step forward towards attaining our desired goal, please accept the assurance of our highest regard.”
Political observers are closely monitoring the development, with analysts speculating on the possible impact of the new party on alliances, electoral strategies, and voter sentiment in the lead-up to 2027.
